Tuesday 9th August

Woke to a beautiful clear and hot day.

The view across Lake Taupo to the snow capped mountains of Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe and the ski fields of Mt Ruapehu were quite breathtaking. Sue and Bruce often ski in this area and it looked very tempting. Unfortunately, with our few layers of clothing we decided to stay in the warmth and go PRAWN FISHING !!

I was a bit sceptical but it turned out to be a really fun day.
We learnt all about the life cycle of the prawn....no, honestly, it was fun!
Then off we went with fishing rods to the many pools available.
The water is kept at a constant 28' and they use the waste water from a nearby thermal power station to do this. The great by product for me was heated seats around the pools.
I was happy!!

George was the first to land a prawn and a few minutes later I caught one and the competition was on! Unfortunately, the prawns weren't very hungry. However, suddenly there was a cry from the far side of the pond and Oscar had landed a whopper with huge blue pincers. Off to the little hut for safe keeping and he measured an impressive 32cms. Pretty soon we heard another big cry, but this time from George, as he had landed a 25cm prawn.
After 3+ hours of serious prawn fishing, I had landed 2, Molly 2, George2, Oscar 3 and the sad little face of poor Paul who didn't get a single prawn!! We stayed extra long to try and help him but it just wasn't to be!!
Off to the restaurant to have our impressive catch cooked and they did taste delicious.
We had to order a few extras because our trawl was not quite enough for the 5 of us!

After such an exhausting day, we had to spend a good few hours back in the hot springs just to soothe our aching limbs.

All in all a good day xx
