Thursday 4th August

Yet another late morning. We are obviously all very relaxed here even with Henry the cockerel crowing early in the morning!

Eventually set off to Devonport and caught the ferry over to Rangitoto Island which is the youngest volcano in NZ at only 600 years old. The whole island is an extinct volcano therefore huge areas where no vegetation has grown and the volcanic rock almost looks like a newly ploughed field. It does not feel like soil though when you fall on it, which George and I found out to our cost!

It was a tough trek to the top but we Bedfords dragged SueSue up there!
Fortunately we had sandwiches with us which tasted delicious after our whole hour of trekking!!
We also looked in some lava caves which wasn't much use without any torches!!

Interestingly, I met one of my fellow England hockey players,Susie, on the ferry over to Rangitoto.
I knew she was having a stopover in NZ but the chances of us meeting on one ferry was pretty remote!

Finished the day off by having one of our favourite suppers....fajitas at Dick and Sam's.
Really great to see them and some of their family. Joe is away at uni in Palmerston North but the twins, Eve and Dan were there to entertain us.
Lots of reminiscing about young farmer days which of course is before my time!!!
Hoping to catch up with them agin next week after we have been away sight seeing for a few days.
A really fun evening x
